Isle City Votes to Continue
Dear Isle City and BPW Family,
As Isle City began to celebrate its 50th anniversary earlier this year, due to people's lives taking them in different directions, we pondered whether or not to continue or fold saying "it's been great." We took the summer off to reflect. Our members met yesterday afternoon and voted to continue as a local until at least May, 2010 to give State our support as we all figure out our next steps as a statewide organization.
Members voted for:
1) Limited meetings between now and May. We'll stay in touch in cyperspace and via regular mail as needed.
2) We adopted the same budget as last year to give our Treasurer authority to pay our ongoing bills like p.o. box. and Alameda Chamber dues (yep, Melody, our dues will be forthcoming, yeah!)
3) We will hold a "Winter Social" at Juelle-Ann's house in December to reconnect. Details to follow in time.
4) We'll hold a Planning Meeting in Jan/Feb 2010 to see what we're going to do through May regarding fundraising, programming, next leaders, etc. Details to follow in time as well.
5) Liz Bucher will continue to serve as our main contact/President, even if just on paper, and will eventually assume checking this e-mail account instead of me once she gets a new computer going. Thanks Liz!!!
MEMBERS: if you have no already done so, please renew your membership with Isle City so we can stay strong and show our commitment, not only to Isle City, but to our district and state federation as we create a new organization. Let me know if you need assistance on renewing. Strength in numbers! If you have suggestions of what you want or need from Isle City, Bay Capital District and the state federation, share with me and I'll forward along. For example, what issues do you want to see us advocate on that would help you to decide to stay with Isle City and BPW? What leadership information or training would you like to receive, if any? If you have suggestions on a new organizational structure for us, please share. It's your organization and we've got a unique opportunity as members to recreate it to fit our needs and wants from a woman's organization.
Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to find answers for you.
Best Personal Wishes,
Kimberlee MacVicar

Special Report
Isle City of Alameda Celebrates its 50th Anniversary
Current and former members of Isle City of Alameda gathered in
June to celebrate Isle City's 50th anniversary. Over 30 were in
attendance for this often funny and emotionally-charged
celebration filled with memories and hopes for the future.
During the course of the dinner, members shared stories and
offered a toast or gratitude to Isle City. One such story was
shared by former member Susan Baliss who met her future husband 35
years ago thanks to a BPW member playing matchmaker. Many members
also shared memories of going to various conventions, the issues
they worked on over the years, the lifelong friends they have met,
a nod to their mentors who were in the room, and the hope that
young girls will learn about women's history whether BPW continues
or not. A high point included presenting a stunned outgoing
2-term president, JoAnn Ainsworth, with a thank you gift to cover
the cost for her to run an add in a magazine promoting the release
of her second novel Matilda's Song.
A delightful part of the evening was the display table filled with
BPW scrapbooks, awards Isle City has received over the decades,
several photos and banners, and a Bay Valley cookbook from the
early 1980s that included a "recipe for a good husband" submitted
by now 50-year member, Harriot Mosbaugh, who was in attendance
with her granddaughters.
Attendees traveled for hours to reach the event, including one
traveling all the way from Maryland! State President Janet Ramsey
and Merced President Mary Ward were in attendance to present state
awards, including one to Isle City's charter member, Margaret
Seaman, for being a 50-year-member of BPW. The multi-hour
traveling effort by so many clearly touched all those present.
"It was a true honor to have played a role in helping to create
this memorable event for our membership," stated event coordinator
Kimberlee MacVicar. "What a fun evening."
